Sri Hoysaleswara Temple, Halebeedu, Karnataka

The Hoysaleswara, a 12th century temple dedicated to Shiva., is located in Halebeedu, Karnataka- the capital of the Hoysala Empire. It was built by King Vishnuvardhana. The temple is a fusion of Shaivism, Vaishnavism, Shaktism, and Jainism. The twin temple is dedicated to Hoysaleswara and Santaleswara Shiva Lingams, which are named after the mae and female aspects- joined and equal. Like many Shiva temples, a nandi faces the lingam inside. the temple also houses a sanctum dedicated to the Sun god, Surya. the temple is carved from soapstone and is noted for it intricate sculptures and inscriptions.

Chennakeshava Temple, Belur, Karnataka

The Chennakeshava (Handsome Kesava)  temple is located in Belur, Karnataka and built by King Vishnuvardhana of the Hoysala Emplire in 1117 BC.  The temple is dedicated to Vishnu and an important pilgrimage site. The temple is remarkable for its architecture, sculptures, reliefs, friezes as well its iconography, inscriptions and history. The temple artwork depicts scenes of secular life in the 12th century, dancers and musicians, as well as a pictorial narration of Hindu texts as the Ramayana and Mahabharata. The Chennakeshava temple is a testimony to the artistic, cultural and theological perspectives in 12th century South India and the Hoysala Empire rule......a fusion of Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism.

Shravanabelagola Temple, Shravanabelagola, Karnataka

Shravanabelagola (white pond of Saravana) is located in the Hassan district of Karnataka. One of the most important pilgrimage destination for Jainism, the Gommateshwara Bahubali statue was built by King Ashoka. The statue stands 58-feet tall. Chandragupta Maurya, the Jain monk, led an ascetic life style and died here in 298 BC.
