Kolam, Tamil Nadu

Drawn by using rice flour or chalk powder, kolams adorn the front of homes in Tamil Nadu. A sign of invitation to welcome all into the home, not the least of whom is Lakshmi, the Goddess of prosperity and wealth. Dogs and shoes are never brought into the house and is a sign of uncleanliness. Rangoli, the other contemporary to Kolam, is also extremely colorful, but a South Indian Kolam is all about symmetry, precision, and complexity.
